Mark
Greenfest, of the New Music Connoisseur (Mar. 2002) Precise and articulate, Soheil Nasseri plays the piano with first-class
technique. His Haydn is lucid; his Liebermann passionate; his Scriabin perfectly evocative - quiet passages alternating with agitated ones
well-played. (Yet, here, as in the Haydn, there are unwritten emphases,
not to be found in the score, which my ear kept searching for, which only a
few pianists detect, and Mr. Nasseri sometimes did.)
After intermission, his Bach sparkled (its precise counterpoint
building an intense sense of joy); his Lev Zhurbin (NY Premiere of
"Sicilienne") playful
and joyful (with its shifting rhythms and attractive melodies); and his
Brahms (Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel), simply splendid.
Lowell
Liebermann's Nocturne No. 6 (1998) and Lev Zhurbin's
"Sicilienne" (2002) for
solo piano fit in well with the 'old masters'. I
enjoyed this
afternoon's
recital a lot. Bravo!
